As a mother and as a New York state Assemblymember, nothing weighs on me more heavily than the responsibility we share to keep our children safe. Every child deserves to grow up free from harm, and every parent deserves to know their community is doing everything possible to protect them. That is why the recent sexual assault of a young child in our community has shaken me so deeply. This horrific act allegedly was committed by someone already known to the system — a repeat offender who had been labeled as “low risk” under New York’s outdated assessment tool. That classification was wrong, and because of it, a child suffered in the most unimaginable way.
