Firefighters from Jersey City rescued two people from the Hudson River this week – one person sinking on a jet ski and another they found clinging to a piling near Exchange Place.

The first incident occurred about 3 p.m. Monday when authorities were called to the Statue of Liberty on a report of a person on a sinking jet ski, according to Jersey City Fire Chief John F. Johnson.

Johnson said first-responders were able to bring the jet skier safely to shore.

The second incident occurred about 6:45 a.m. Tuesday when a 35-year-old man experiencing a mental health emergency jumped into the river near Exchange Place and clung to a piling, Johnson said.

Police found the man near Grundy Pier. The man was given a life preserver by firefighters and was able to tread water until he was pulled out
