Except for a few prominent brands, Vancouver is not known for its garment industry. But, in the early part of the 20th century, some people and factories put the city on the clothing-manufacturing map.
“The concept of leisure wear is sometimes attributed to Marjorie Hamilton, who was a garment manufacturer and designer in Vancouver,” says historian Natasha Fairweather. “Leisure wear is what most of us wear these days, but Hamilton is sometimes credited with inventing that concept in the 1950s.”
