It was our first high school Athlete of the Week voting of the new sports season and with all precincts reporting it wound up being too close to call.

So in the spirit of fair play and because they both have the same name, we are declaring Coachella Valley's Vanessa Garcia and Shadow Hills' Vanessa Monaco as co-winners of the first Desert Sun Athlete of the Week voting.

I can see why it was a tough call. Garcia has been all over the floor for the Arabs' volleyball team and Monaco has been a revelation at quarterback for the Knights' flag football team.

We'll see if this week's voting is just as tight.
