The body of an 18-year-old woman was found in a canal in northwest Miami-Dade after a series of crashes that left three other people critically injured, authorities said.

Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office officials said deputies had responded to the area of Northwest 72nd Avenue and Northwest 58th Street around 11:30 p.m. Sunday regarding a missing person.

Missing Persons Unit detectives also responded and searched the area but nothing was found.

On Monday morning, detectives returned to the area and found a body floating in a canal nearby.

She has since been identified as 18-year-old Angelina Plasencia, the sheriff's office said Tuesday.

Detectives believe the incident began with a crash at Northwest 74th Avenue and Northwest 58th Street.
