CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- East Charlotte will officially have a new representative on City Council.

Following a recount on Tuesday, the Mecklenburg County Board of Elections certified Juan Diego “JD” Mazuera Arias as the District 5 Democratic primary winner by 34 votes over incumbent Marjorie Molina. After the Democratic primary last week, Molina trailed by 37; both candidates gained votes in the recount.

Molina was first elected to the post in July 2022 after the 2021 elections were postponed due to COVID. In the previous primary in 2023, Molina won by more than 800 votes, and she was unopposed in the last two general elections.
