MOUNT AIRY, N.C. — Surry County deputies have charged a 43-year-old man with murder after they say he stabbed another man to death during an altercation over the weekend.

According to the Surry County Sheriff's Office, deputies were called by the Mount Airy Police Department to respond to Northern Regional Hospital about a stabbing. When they arrived, deputies learned that 58-year-old Francisco Gonzalez had died from an apparent stab wound after he was transported to the hospital by a private vehicle.

The Sheriff's Office eventually learned that Gonzalez was involved in an altercation on Effie Lane in Mount Airy with 43-year-old Jason Lee King at King's residence. Police say King stabbed Gonzalez and fled the scene in a silver Honda Civic.
