LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) — A man has taken a plea deal after a 15-year-old girl told school officials about a series of sexual assaults last year.
According to court documents, 20-year-old Joe Brummett plead no contest to felony child abuse on Tuesday. Brummett had previously been charged with on a single count of first-degree sexual assault.
Brummett will be sentenced on Nov. 19. He faces up to three years in prison, 18 months of post-release supervision, and a $10,000 fine.
Brummett had initially been arrested on Jan. 7, months after a teen spoke with officials at a local high school on Oct. 24, 2024. The girl came in for a forensic interview a few days later. Investigators learned she’d been living with a family friend earlier in the year, later identified as Brummett.
