Three months after being awarded a raise that makes him one of the highest-paid superintendents in Texas, Mike Miles is getting another big bump.

The controversial state-appointed superintendent for Houston ISD, whose instructional reforms have led to improved standardized test scores but also widespread staffing turnover and pushback from teachers, parents and district stakeholders, is getting a bonus of $173,660 based on his annual performance evaluation. HISD's board of managers, also appointed by Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath, signed off on the incentive pay last week after Miles was rated based on achievement as well as leadership and vision.
