CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- A fight is unraveling at Ardrey Kell High School over a tribute to Charlie Kirk.
Queen City News’ Chief Legal Analyst Khalif Rhodes says there is a clear definition of when schools can step in on free speech.
Ardrey Kell is part of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, and when students painted the Ballantyne-area school rock with the words, “Live Like Kirk" for the slain conservative activist, it wasn’t the first time the boulder became a lightning bolt for controversy.
“2020 in the wake of George Floyd and the civil unrest in this country, 'Black Lives Matter' and the names of individuals that were killed were painted on that very rock,” said Rhodes.
The rock was then vandalized and eventually painted over with messages of unity.
