Iowa Senate Majority Leader Jack Whitver will not seek reelection in 2026 and is ending his stint as the chamber's majority leader.
Whitver, a Republican from Grimes, will serve as majority leader until Senate Republicans meet to elect a new leader in the near future, Senate Republicans announced Tuesday, Sept. 16.
In May, Whitver publicly revealed his diagnosis with a brain tumor and has received radiation and drug therapy. He was reelected in November to serve as majority leader, a role he's held since 2018.
He won reelection to his four-year Iowa Senate term in November 2022, so his retirement leaves the seat open for the 2026 midterm elections.
