One of Stow's canine residents will enjoy more walks and pets after a human neighbor saved his life after he started choking.

On Sept. 11, the city recognized Kem Cook, a registered nurse who has more than 35 years of medical experience, for putting her skills to use in saving Winston, her four-legged neighbor. The dog, while on a walk, found a chicken bone and tried to eat it. Winston's owner tried the Heimlich maneuver but Winston passed out.

Cook ran over and continued the Heimlich maneuver. She was able to see the bone in the dog's throat and scooped it out, but at that point Winston became unconscious, so Cook started performing CPR. Within one minute, Winston started breathing again, and he was taken to his veterinarian.

Winston is now doing well, and came to the City Council meet
