Civil Rights Attorney Ben Crump will lead the civil rights investigation in the hanging death of Delta State University student Demartravion "Trey" Reed , according to a statement released to the Clarion Ledger by Crump's press office.

Reed was found hanging from a tree on campus on Monday, Sept. 15. The Bolivar County Coroner said as of this publication, that despite the hanging of a 21-year-old Black man in the Mississippi Delta , there is no evidence of foul play.

It was one of two hangings in Mississippi on Sept. 15.

The statement said Crump is working with a number of civil rights organizations to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation.

"Trey Reed was a young man full of promise and warmth, deeply loved and respected by all who knew him," the statement reads. "
