ROCKWALL, Texas — When Sgt. Chris Kemp walked out of the Lewisville Police Department in March, he expected to return for his next shift. Instead, what started as migraines led to a devastating diagnosis that has kept him off the streets for six months — and put him in the fight of his life.
Doctors discovered a baseball-sized tumor in his brain. The 30-year police veteran, who also volunteered for 14 years as a Mabank firefighter, was diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme, an aggressive and incurable stage four cancer.
“I miss it. I really do,” Kemp said, reflecting on his career and the unexpected pause. After surgery and ongoing chemotherapy, the cancer battle continues. Just three weeks ago, doctors found two new tumors.
His prognosis: 12 months. Six of those have already passed.
