The U.S. Department of Education has issued an update on its progress in processing student loan income-driven repayment plan applications. This update was submitted in response to a lawsuit from the American Federation for Teachers, which claims the department is denying borrowers access to loan forgiveness or affordable repayment plans.
According to the education secretary, 305,000 applications for income-driven repayment plans were either approved or denied in August. However, more than a million applications are still awaiting processing.
In addition to income-driven repayment plans, the department processed 5,600 applications for student loan forgiveness last month. There remain over 70,000 forgiveness applications pending.
