PRINCEVILLE, N.C. (WITN) - A historical marker was unveiled in Princeville to mark the 26th anniversary of Hurricane Floyd making landfall in North Carolina, bringing historic flooding to many communities.
Princeville, the nation’s oldest town chartered by former slaves, still stands tall after being swept underwater by Hurricane Floyd 26 years ago.
The widespread destruction impacted many.
“I lost my home, all the citizens lost their homes,” Former Princeville Mayor Delia Perkins said.
The impacts of Hurricane Floyd are still felt in Princeville, and the town now has another reminder in the form of a historical marker, situated near the Tar River bridge into Tarboro.
“It’s a reminder about our resilience, where we came from, where we are now,” Princeville Mayor Bobbie Jones said.
