A 170-year-old Gettysburg landmark will be repainted this fall. Additional improvements, including gardens and educational exhibits, will be completed next year.
A capital campaign for preservation work in and around the Evergreen Cemetery Gatehouse is underway.
Officials hope to raise $250,000 to restore the Gatehouse, and install informational wayside exhibits and gardens. Additional funds will be held to address the future care of the Gatehouse. The cemetery is located on Baltimore Street.
The “Gatehouse Preservation Project” will involve painting of the exterior bricks, which cemetery officials said were painted at the time of the Civil War in 1863, as well as an improved entranceway, ceremonial gardens, and three informative wayside exhibits for visitors.
