PULLMAN, Wash. — It’s Apple Cup week—and the WSU and UW football teams are preparing for the state’s biggest rivalry game this Saturday. It turns out--this historic game wasn’t always called the “Apple Cup.”

For the past year, WSU proudly displayed the Apple Cup trophy in the football complex. This week, Apple cup week, the trophy will be kept in a safe place until the battle on Gesa Field determines if it will remain in Pullman or travel to Seattle.

At its core, the Apple Cup is a symbol.

Despite changes to college football, the Apple Cup remains the biggest rivalry in Washington state. One that started in 1900, with the winner taking home the prized trophy.
