Donald Trump has arrived in the UK for his second state visit, where he is set to meet prominent figures including King Charles III, Prince William, and Sir Keir Starmer. His arrival at Stansted Airport was met with a mix of royal welcomes and significant protests, highlighting the contentious nature of his visit.
As Air Force One landed, demonstrators gathered outside Windsor Castle, chanting, "Say it loud, say it clear, Donald Trump's not welcome here." A large photograph of Jeffrey Epstein alongside Trump was displayed, prompting criticism from Sir Keir Starmer, who labelled the visit a "catastrophic failure of judgement."
Body language expert Inbaal Honigman noted that Trump appeared to be cautious during his descent from the aircraft, likely aiming to avoid the negative attention he received during his previous visit in 2019, when he walked ahead of Melania Trump and the late Queen. Honigman observed, "He takes measured, precise steps, and is perfectly in-step with Melania, as if they decided beforehand that they would walk down together."
Upon stepping off the plane, Trump reportedly commented to Melania, "Ooh it's cold. I'm glad we are wearing our coats," and later expressed gratitude to dignitaries, saying, "Thank you for coming to meet us here, we’re having a great September back home."
The visit comes alongside the announcement of a new tech deal between the UK and the US, which is expected to bring £31 billion of investment to Britain from American technology companies, including $30 billion from Microsoft. Prime Minister Starmer described the agreement as a significant step in enhancing the UK-US relationship, promising growth and security across the country.
Despite the formalities, the atmosphere surrounding Trump's visit remains charged, with protests and criticisms overshadowing the diplomatic engagements.
