LONGVIEW, Wash. — Three years ago, the city of Longview opened a shelter pod village on the outskirts of the city. It's been a lifeline for homeless people like Elrod Garrett. But Hope Village is not long for this world; at the end of the month, the city is shutting it down.

"Been homeless in this city for — off and on — for six years, eight years, something like that," Garrett said.

He's been at Hope Village for the last few months. This is his third stay, he said.

"Part of my requirements of being here was being sober, and I am eight weeks clean and sober," he said. "They just found me housing today, come and let me know this morning."

That's good news for Garrett, and he took it as such.
