Nanaimo native Ethan Katzberg has won a gold medal and broken a World Championship record in Tokyo on Tuesday.

At the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25, Katzberg threw his hammer 84.70 metres, which broke the championship record, and his own North American record.

He secured the record-breaking throw on his second round, after throwing 82.66m in the first round, which put him in first.

Germany’s Merlin Hummel then overtook him, throwing 82.77m.

Hummel ultimately took second place with his first throw, and Hungary’s Bence Halász came in third, throwing 82.69m.
