COLUMBIA, S.C. — Columbia City Council voted Tuesday night to make changes to the city’s short-term rental regulations while delaying a decision on whether the rentals will continue to be allowed in residential neighborhoods.
Council members raised the minimum age to book a rental from 18 to 21 and voted to allow single-night stays, removing the two-night minimum that was previously required.
But the council postponed discussion on whether to ban short-term rentals in residential areas, a move that has both residents and property owners on edge.
“What we're asking is to level the playing field and allow it in all areas so all people can participate in the short term rental economy,” said David Bergmann, a short-term rental owner and property manager.
Some residents argue the rentals ar
