CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, Ohio -- Local immigrant rights advocates urged City Council Monday night to take up a measure that would provide publicly funded legal counsel for residents detained by federal immigration authorities, amid a nationwide crackdown under President Donald Trump.
Members of the group Cleveland Heights for Immigrants Rights said they were encouraged that council members had verbally supported such a measure at a past meeting. However, the group had a new message Monday night: now it’s time for action.
“Verbal support is important, and I appreciate it especially given your time constraints. But we also need action,” Quinn Yoder said. “Every day that we wait is another day that community members are not protected and safety is important.”
