LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - State Department leaders are taking a stand against the Michigan state budget passed by the Republican-led House.

The budget includes major cuts to healthcare, safety and agriculture, with many state departments taking a hit.

Republicans say the goal is to cut waste, but department leaders say it’s a step in the wrong direction.

“As Michiganders watch the news they tend to ask to simple question: what does this mean for me and my family?” said Governor Gretchen Whitmer. “Failing to get this done means more uncertainty.”

“Doing better budgeting and being more vigilant is what we did. We can do what we need to do without cutting services and raising taxes,” said Republican Representative Donni Steele.

State department leaders say vital services are being cut.
