PHOENIX — A Tucson man was sentenced to more than eight years in prison after he plead guilty to attempted travel with intent to engage in illicit sexual activity with a minor, officials said.

John Stephen Baker, 71, was sentenced on Wednesday and his time in prison will be followed by a lifetime supervised release, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona.

How was the Tucson man caught?

Between February and May 2023, Baker communicated with an undercover Homeland Security Investigations special agent whom he thought was a 14-year-old girl.

Prosecutors said that during the conversations, Baker asked the agent about previous sexual experiences and said that he was scared to “(engage) in sexual intercourse” with the girl due to the possibility of being arrested
