Opposition Leader Vincent Tarzia says new Liberal Party recruit Frank Pangallo "should have checked his sources" before supplying a parliamentary committee with inaccurate research citations to back up the latter's claims that desalination plants can contribute to algal blooms.
But Mr Tarzia rebuffed government calls to remove Mr Pangallo from state parliament's powerful Budget and Finance committee where the mistake occurred, describing the incident as a "massive beat up by Labor".
Mr Pangallo apologised in parliament on Tuesday for what he described as an "administrative error" where he submitted four incorrect research citations to the committee about algal blooms and desalination plants.
