COLUMBIA STATION, Ohio — A young cat named Gooseberry was given a grim diagnosis earlier this year -- one that almost always results in death.

But thanks to medical breakthroughs in veterinary medicine as well as some determined caregivers at Berea Animal Rescue Friends, the cat not only survived -- she is thriving.

Gooseberry, now called Ramona, recently returned to Berea ARF for an emotional reunion with the staff who helped save her life.

“She’s huge and she’s so regal. I cried. I love seeing where she’s at and everything like that, so it makes me feel good,” said Kymberlyn Axford, who is Shelter Operations Manager at the facility.

Born in foster care in 2024, Gooseberry’s future looked bright. She was even adopted -- but later returned after her health began to decline.
