Hawaii County’s new law to regulate short-term vacation rentals is set to take effect Dec. 20 but will likely be pushed back to the end of March to give operators more time to comply.
Council members Ashley Kierkiewicz and Heather Kimball will review where things currently stand after the adoption of Bill 47, now known as Ordinance 25-50, and the results of an economic impact analysis. The law aims to regulate STVRs — rentals lasting less than 180 consecutive days — in Hawaii County and ensure these rentals are properly registered and monitored.
A transient vacation rental is defined as any dwelling, unit or room rented for short stays, excluding traditional hotels, motels and timeshares. The law differentiates between “hosted” rentals, where the owner stays on site during guests’ visits
