The Minns government has announced the most significant overhaul of New South Wales’ planning system in nearly half a century, vowing to cut red tape and fast-track housing approvals.

Premier Chris Minns said the current system had become a major obstacle to development, describing it as a “maze” for builders and homeowners.

“To build a house, to build an apartment, you have to run through that maze,” he said.

The NSW government is hoping the changes will help meet its target to build 377,000 homes by 2029.

“At the moment, in some instances, (builders) have to go and collect approvals or reports from 20 different government agencies. With this change, there will be one door to knock on.”
