Melissa and Andrew Akash are using their experience as parents of a child with pilomyxoid astrocytoma, an inoperable brain tumor, to help other families dealing with similar challenges.
“Drew has been battling this since he was nine months old and we have been thrown into this unknown world you never think you are going to be in,” said Melissa. “Sitting in an oncology lab with a bunch of kids getting chemo; I can’t even describe it.”
The SuperDrew Foundation nonprofit supports families with children who are battling cancer. The mission is to help with things that are important and needed beyond medical care.
“There was a family that needed to take Uber every day in order to get their child to treatment so we paid for Uber gift cards so they could do that,” Melissa said.
