Any hope that Donald Trump might try to calm the waters as the finger-pointing continues after the murder of far-right conservative gadfly Charlie Kirk was blown to pieces on Tuesday as the president headed off to his trip to London.

On Wednesday morning, the co-hosts of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” showed a clip of the president’s confrontation with Jonathan Karl of ABC, where the president threatened the journalist with being investigated by the DOJ and told him he had “hate" in his heart.

That led co-host Joe Scarborough to laugh, at first, and point out, “So really, there's so much to sort through there. First of all, Donald Trump goes from sort of this stream of consciousness situation where he is –– goes from sort of WWF fighter mode to Mar-a-Lago concierge.”

Mocking Trump acting like a concierge telling a guest, “You should take your beautiful wife down —,” he switched gears and exclaimed, “He knows Jon [Karl]. He's the first person who's ever said Jon Karl's heart is filled with hatred. He knows it's not. He knows Jon Karl and likes Jon Karl.”

“But this is what happens in a day's time,” he added. “You have an attorney general who says, 'I'm going after people who say things that we don't like, that we call hate speech' when prodded along by the interviewer saying, ‘Hey, when do we start putting handcuffs on people for saying things that they think are hatred?'"

“And you, you see how quickly this is, this is the most extreme version of what law professors talked about when they warned us of a slippery slope that this was a slip-and slide like going down from like Mount Kilimanjaro,” he continued. “It went very quickly from a stupid thing an attorney general said to a stupid thing that a president said.”
