NEWTON, Iowa (KCCI) - KCCI reports , the Iowa Speedway in Newton is noticeably absent from next year’s IndyCar schedule .

The 2026 season has 17 events, opening March 1 at the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg in Florida and closing Sept. 6 at the WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca in California.

There will be no Iowa stop between them, though.

“I expected it,” said Paul Kool, an IndyCar fan.

Kool has been a barber for 63 years.

He said due to the cost, he watched the last two IndyCar race weekends from his home.

The first sign Indy may put the brakes on its Newton stop was this year’s low turnout.

“I knew when I saw the crowd, it wasn’t going to happen very long. They can’t. It surprised me. I watched from home. I said there is nobody out there,” Kool said.
