Authorities are actively searching for a man who crashed a vehicle into the gate of the FBI field office in Pittsburgh early Wednesday morning. The incident occurred around 2:40 a.m. and is being treated as a targeted act of terror, according to the FBI.
The suspect has been identified as Donald Henson, a resident of Penn Hills, Pennsylvania. After ramming his car into the entrance gate, Henson reportedly retrieved an American flag from the back seat and threw it over the gate before fleeing the scene on foot.
FBI Special Agent in Charge Christopher Giordano stated, "We look at this as an act of terror against the FBI. This was a targeted attack on this building. Thankfully no one was hurt, but we are going to exhaust every ability we have under the federal law to find, apprehend and prosecute this subject to the fullest extent."
Giordano noted that Henson is a former military member with a history of mental health issues and is considered dangerous. However, investigators do not believe he was armed during the incident. He had previously visited the FBI office a few weeks prior to make a complaint that agents found confusing. Giordano mentioned that agents had contacted Henson to inform him that no charges would result from his complaint.
FBI Pittsburgh spokesman Bradford Arick described the vehicle as a white sedan with derogatory writing on it, although it was not directed at any specific group. Investigators are currently looking into the significance of the writing.
The FBI is urging anyone with information about Henson or the incident to contact the FBI tips line or call 911. A bomb squad was also present at the scene as part of the investigation.
