Following the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University, police have interviewed Tyler Robinson's roommate and romantic partner, who identifies as transgender. The roommate provided authorities with text messages exchanged with Robinson that allegedly detail his motive for the shooting.
On September 10, the day of the incident, the roommate received a text from Robinson instructing them to look under his keyboard. Upon doing so, the roommate discovered a note stating, "I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk and I’m going to take it." Authorities later found a photograph of this note.
The text exchange that followed revealed alarming details. The roommate initially responded in disbelief, asking, "What?????????????? You’re joking, right????" Robinson replied, "I am still ok my love, but am stuck in Orem for a little while longer yet. Shouldn’t be long until I can come home, but I gotta grab my rifle still. To be honest I had hoped to keep this secret till I died of old age. I am sorry to involve you."
The conversation continued with the roommate questioning whether Robinson was involved in the shooting. Robinson confirmed, saying, "I am, I’m sorry." He explained that he had planned to retrieve his rifle but was hindered by police activity in the area. "I had enough of his hatred. Some hate can’t be negotiated out," he stated, referring to Kirk.
Robinson mentioned that he had been planning the act for over a week and expressed concern about leaving evidence behind. He described a scenario where he had to abandon the rifle he had hidden, worrying about how to explain its loss to his father. "I might have to abandon it and hope they don’t find prints. How the f–k will I explain losing it to my old man?" he wrote.
In a later message, Robinson indicated he intended to turn himself in, stating, "I’m gonna turn myself in willingly, one of my neighbors here is a deputy for the sheriff." He also urged his roommate not to speak to the media or answer questions from police without a lawyer present.
The investigation into the shooting continues as authorities analyze the evidence and messages exchanged between Robinson and his roommate.
