MADISON, Wis. — The Madison Common Council was one vote short of extending the Dairy Drive's contract after Tuesday's meeting that went into the early hours of Wednesday.
These tiny homes on Dairy Drive began as housing for people in November 2021 after the city responded to an "unsafe" unregulated encampment at Reindahl Park. Roughly 100 people without access to housing have lived in their temporary homes since its inception.
The City of Madison's Board of Public Works recommended dismantling the site in August.
The property, which provides on-site mental health, medical, and social supports, was originally funded by one-time federal COVID relief funds. According to City of Madison Community Development Director Jim O'Keefe, those services cost between $60,000-70,000 per month to maint
