Manchester United could be ruing their decision to not appeal after Grimsby were reprimanded for fielding an ineligible player in their Carabao Cup second round victory over the Red Devils .

The Mariners were handed a £20,000 fine for featuring Clarke Oduor in the iconic win. While United had grounds to lodge a grievance, they opted against doing so, with Grimsby now into the fourth round of the League Cup having beaten Sheffield Wednesday 1-0 on Tuesday evening.

Ruben Amorim is under intense pressure following United's League Cup exit and the crushing 3-0 loss in the Manchester Derby on Sunday. Had United appealed, and won, then they could have been facing Wednesday on Tuesday evening at the expense of Grimsby who could have been kicked out of the competition.
