South Burlington, Vermont – Jerry Greenfield, one of the co-founders of Ben & Jerry’s, announced Wednesday that he is resigning from the company after nearly 50 years, saying its parent company, Unilever, has stifled the ice cream brand’s independence. Ben Cohen, a co-founder, shared news of Greenfield’s resignation on X .

“After 47 years, Jerry has made the difficult decision to step down from the company we built together,” Cohen wrote.

In the letter, Greenfield said the company — known for blending quirky flavors with activism — has lost its independence and core values following its acquisition by Unilever. He expressed disappointment that the brand no longer stands for justice, equity and shared humanity, principles that once defined its mission.
