A COMMON medicine has been linked to a higher risk of blood clots and stroke, warn scientists.

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is used by millions of women who are experiencing menopause symptoms.

A new study found women with type 2 diabetes who take an oral form of HRT have double the risk of developing pulmonary embolism than those using HRT skin patches.

This is when a blood clot blocks one or more blood vessels in the lungs.

They also face a 21 per cent increased risk of heart disease.

The researchers said their findings should be a serious consideration by patients and doctors when deciding what form of HRT to take.

HRT is regularly prescribed to women suffering from the effects of menopause to relieve symptoms such as hot flashes and night sweats.
