The Government has responded to calls to for all pensioners to get free TV licences, saying that there are "no plans to introduce a new Government concession for all pensioners at this time."

A petition on the Parliament website claims that people over the age of 66 "should receive a state-financed free TV licence" as "many pensioners live on the breadline with only the TV for company". Over 10,000 people have signed the petition online - meaning the Government has to respond to it.

It comes as only certain pensioners are currently eligible for free or discounted TV licences, along with other groups of people such as those who are blind or in residential care.
