PAINESVILLE, Ohio — The Lake County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Wednesday that it has entered into two agreements with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) under the federal 287(g) program, allowing deputies and jail staff to play a limited role in enforcing immigration law.

In a release, Lake County Sheriff Frank Leonbruno said the agreements — signed last week and not yet active pending required training — authorize participation in both the Task Force Model and the Warrant Service Officer Program.

Under the Task Force Model, deputies on patrol can enforce immigration laws during routine duties, such as traffic stops, if they encounter someone with an ICE detainer. The Sheriff’s Office stressed its participation will be limited to routine encounters and not broader enforcem
