WAKULLA COUNTY, Fla. (WCTV) - A local non-profit is rallying community support to protect Wakulla County’s natural beauty, from its rivers to its coastline.

Keep Wakulla County Beautiful (KWCB) works to promote waste reduction, encourage recycling and support beautification efforts across the county.

Steve Cushman, KWCB president and longtime cave diver, said the situation is nearing a breaking point.

“If we don’t take care of that out there, we are going to end up in a dire situation,” Cushman said. “Everything trickles to the ocean, and it picks up all the trash along the way.”

Cushman said marine debris poses serious threats to wildlife, often going unnoticed once it sinks out of sight. Volunteers frequently collect plastic straws, bags and even abandoned tires from forests, beaches
