HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) - Connecticut leaders and superintendents gathered on Wednesday to talk about student safety in the wake of increased immigration enforcement activity.
Gov. Ned Lamont joined the school officials for a news conference at the Sports and Medical Sciences Academy in Hartford.
They touched on efforts to make students and families feel safe attending school.
The discussion came as 18-year-old Esdrás Zabaleta-Ramirez, a New Haven student, was recently released from ICE custody .
Officials said he was picked up at his job on July 21 and was held by ICE for 44 days before he was allowed to post bond in Massachusetts.
During that period, New Haven and state officials rallied in support of him .
