Pafos FC defender David Luiz went off injured in the first half of his team's Champions League opener against Olimpiacos on Wednesday.

In other news, there is a club called Pafos FC which plays in the Champions League and currently employs David Luiz.

It appears most of the soccer world missed the veteran defender returning to Europe in August, signing for the Cypriot team that only formed in 2014.

Luiz, 38, made his name with the Brazil national team as well as a lengthy career in Europe where he played for Benfica, Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and Arsenal.

It appeared that Luiz's time in Europe had ended in 2021 when he returned to Brazil, signing for Flamengo. But after a six-month spell with Fortaleza ended this summer, an opportunity to once again play in Europe arose.

Pafos FC won the Cypriot First Division title last season, which saw the club reach the Champions League for the first time in its 11-year history.

Looking to make a splash on the transfer market, Pafos pulled off the surprise signing of one of the best known defenders of the past decade.

Luiz made his first Champions League appearance since 2017 on Wednesday, but his match was over after just 34 minutes when he suffered a muscle injury. Pafos managed to hang on for a 0-0 draw in its first ever Champions League game.

As the soccer world processed the injury and the fact Luiz was still even playing, let alone for a Champions League team from Cyprus, social media was flooded with reactions.
