Shoppers feeling sticker shock at their supermarket checkout line aren’t dreaming it. Retail prices on food in almost every category are on the rise.

The latest Consumer Price Index for food items shows a rise of .6% in August over the prior month — the biggest month-over-month increase since August 2022.

The biggest increases are being seen in beef, poultry, fish and eggs (+5.6 %), but also ticking upward was the cost of fruits and vegetables (+1.9 %), dairy (+1.3%) and cereal and bakery products (+1.1%).

Experts put some of the blame on President Trump’s tariffs, especially for the eye-popping rise in coffee prices, up 20.9 % year over year.
