The provincial government is investing $19.5 million in the new recreation complex in south Cambridge, a major boost for a project set to open next fall.
Cambridge’s Preston Memorial Auditorium and the Ayr Community Centre in North Dumfries will also receive $1 million each for upgrades.
The funding, announced Wednesday by Minister of Sport Neil Lumsden, is part of the province’s $200-million Community Sport and Recreation Infrastructure Fund.
Mayor Jan Liggett said the provincial funding will reduce the tax load.
“Some of this was going to be put on tax levy. So it just means it’s less payment for the residents on their taxes,” she told The Record.
“We’re going to be able to allocate money a lot differently in our taxes. We’re working on taxes currently … I’m working on the budget.”
