FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - Fort Wayne is preparing for a major shift in how the city pays for essential services, and Fort Wayne Mayor Sharon Tucker says her administration is taking action now to protect the community’s future.

Senate Bill 1, passed earlier this year, is designed to give Indiana homeowners property tax relief. The law shifts some city funding away from property taxes to local income taxes instead.

While the change is aimed at easing the burden for property owners, it also creates challenges for cities like Fort Wayne that rely heavily on property taxes to balance their budgets.

Beginning in 2027 and 2028, Fort Wayne will see changes to its revenue streams, which could impact how the city funds public safety, parks, and other services.
