A former Vancouver police officer said he made the decision to engage in a high-speed chase with murder suspects in 2022 because he thought they might be on their way to kill someone else.

Const. Ian Reimers, who is now an RCMP officer in Penticton, testified Wednesday at the murder trial of Balraj Basra about why he chased a white Honda CRV through Burnaby, New Westminster and into Richmond.

Basra is charged with first-degree murder and arson for the fatal morning shooting of Vish Walia in the parking lot of the golf course beside the University of B.C. on Oct. 17, 2022.

After the gunfire, an area resident reported the plate number of the suspect CRV as it left the area.
