TEMPLE, Texas — On July 17, while at work, Hannah Ochoa learned her 3-year-old son Keaton had drowned in a backyard pool after unlocking a door she had specifically warned family members about.
Now, through her grief, Ochoa is channeling her pain into advocacy, pushing for changes to Texas building codes that she believes could prevent similar tragedies.
The morning of July 17 started like many others. Ochoa, who works in property management, dropped off her two young sons at their grandparents' home in College Station. But she had concerns about the visit.
"I kind of warned them that I was worried about the pool with them being so little," Ochoa said. "I know that lock's very low. I told them, 'you know, they can unlock the door now, so please make sure that they don't.'"
