WACO, Texas — September is Hunger Action Month nationwide, and according to Feeding America, the country has reached its highest rate of food insecurity in over a decade.

One local non-profit is looking to change that statistic by providing healthy meals to families in need across Central Texas.

"It's Hunger Action Month to us every month," Shepherd's Heart CEO Robert Gager said. "We do 18 mobile distributions each month, and today is just one of our stops. Right now, we've got another one going on in Bellmead."

And the numbers are staggering. Last year, the group served more than 104,000 families. This year, they expect that number to climb even higher, possibly reaching 120,000.
