MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - The Madison Police Department is adding two new positions into the force next year with hopes to better serve the homeless population.
The positions are called neighborhood resource officers, and they already exist across Madison. Madison Chief of Police John Patterson said he is strategically adding more NROs to help address police interactions with people who are homeless.
“This is a segment of the community that I think we have been kind of ad hoc in our response of how we provide service to them,” said Patterson.
His solution is to reallocate resources within MPD to add two more neighborhood resource officers who are dedicated to creating connections with people who are homeless and bettering communication between police and homeless services.
